"Following Scripture Is Required "

Prayer is instant communication with God and scripture is God’s chosen way of communicating with us. The importance of this is that we must understand what scripture is saying in order to hear Him.

Misunderstanding scripture happens more often than not and it takes place because many of us rely on religious leaders of various denominations to do our interpreting. This is not good because these religious leaders are restricted to only being able to use the interpretations of their particular denomination to assist us. Common sense tells that it is not possible for the varied and different views of all denominations to represent God’s Truth. Doing your own research is required and it prevents having to choose between the various theories being taught.

2 Tim. 3:13 KJV gives reason for us to do our own Truth digging; it lessens the likelihood of us being seduced and deceived:

But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

And 2 Tim. 3:14 KJV continues with the importance of receiving God’s Truth:

But continue thou in the things which thou hast learned and hast been assured of, knowing of whom thou hast learned them

It is God’s teaching that assures us and it is we that are responsible for learning; we are our own teachers; 2 Tim. 3:15 KJV continues the thought by reminding us that we have known since we were a child that our faith and understanding comes from understanding scripture…hearing God:

And that from a child thou hast known the holy scriptures, which are able to make thee wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

2 Tim. 3:16 KJV continues by reminding us that understanding scripture is required for us to receive the wisdom and inspiration that we need:

All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness:

And it is hearing what God says in scripture that allows us to understand prophecy; 2 Peter 1:19 KJV describes this understanding as a light God shines into the darkness surrounding us:

We have also a more sure word of prophecy; whereunto ye do well that ye take heed, as unto a light that shineth in a dark place, until the day dawn, and the day star arise in your hearts

Christ is the Day Star and scripture is the light that he uses to speak to us; understanding what He is saying removes us from darkness.

2 Peter 1:20 KJV addresses the correlation of understanding God’s Word and interpreting prophecy:

Knowing this first, that no prophecy of the scripture is of any private interpretation.

It is our job to dig the Truth of prophecy from God’s Word and doing this requires putting forth effort and using the tools that God provides to do it. Isaiah 28:9 KJV shows who and how God helps to accomplish this:

Whom shall he teach knowledge? and whom shall he make to understand doctrine? them that are weaned from the milk, and drawn from the breasts.

Weaning ourselves from the milk (depending on others to interpret God’s word for us) is the first thing that God requires. We replace listening to man with using God’s tools and doing our own interpreting. God refers to this as receiving the meat of His Word and in Psalm 119:27 KJV we see ourselves seeking this help:

Make me to understand the way of thy precepts: so shall I talk of thy wondrous works.

Showing His wondrous works requires understanding His precepts as you ask yourself.

Have these verses helped me see how important it is to understanding what God is saying to me?

Do I see God telling me that understanding comes from the direct path that He provides me with and that this path includes not listening to man and his denominational input and theory?
